Riya Earns Right To Battle Prerna Final

Top seed Prerna Bhambri breezed into the final of the KUDA Kalaburagi ITF $10,000 Women’s Tennis Tournament with straight sets 6-3, 6-2 victory over unseeded Tamachan Momkoonthod of Thailand here at the Chandrashekar Patil Stadium here on Friday. The World No. 479 spent 57 minutes on court to dispose of the World 837 in the first semi-final of the day.

Prerna was in no mood to play around and made her intentions clear, hitting winners after winners to demoralize her Thai opponent. Prerna broke Thamachan in the sixth and eighth games, while being broken in the seventh of the first set and then broke the Thai in the first and seventh games while successfully holding her serves.

Unseeded Riya Bhatia earned the right to battle Prerna for the tile when she accounted for a third seed en route to the title tilt. In the second semi-final of the day, Riya defeated eight seed Eetee Maheta in straight sets, with an identical score line of 7-5, 7-5.

Having seen off a wild card entrant in the first round, Riya defeated fourth seed Druthi Tatachar, sixth seed Sharmadaa Baluu and eighth seed Eetee Maheta on her way to the final. The contested oscillated. Riya took a 2-0 lead before Eetee clinched four games in a row only to see Riya clinch the next three. At 5-all, Riya held serve to go up 6-5. Eetee serving to stay in the match saved two match points from 0-40, before Riya clinched the set.

The second set saw Riya leading 3-1 before Eetee again ran away with four games to lead 5-3. Riya showed determination that has been her hall mark all week, rallying brilliantly to win the next four games and advance to the final.

Druthi-Karman claim doubles crown

In the doubles final the fourth seed Indian pair of Druthi Tatachar and Karman Kaur Thandi rallied from being a set down to best third seeds Prerna Bhambri and Kanika Vaidya 1-6, 6-3, 10-7. Prerna and Kanika raced away win the first set breezing past the fourth seeds without a fuss 6-1.

The fourth seeds took a break and came back a changed pair. They got into their groove and had the third seeds running all around the court. With the crowd egging them on Druthi and Karman raised the level of their game and forced the tie breaker which they clinched 10-7 with some wonderful tennis.
