The ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour event got underway at the Mysore Tennis Club courts following a brief opening ceremony here on Tuesday morning.

Sri Maheshwar Rao, Managing Director, BMRCL, Government of Karnataka, and Hon. Secretary, KSLTA, and Sri Lakshmikanth Reddy G, Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate, inaugurated the $15,000 event.

Tournament Director PS Vastrad, a retired IAS officer, welcomed the small gathering to the heritage city that has become an important stop on the ITF calendar.

Sri Ashaad Ur Rahman Shariff, Commissioner, Mysore City Corporation, and international player Prajwal Dev were the guests of honour, while Sri AR Alagappan, President, Mysore Tennis Club, presided over the ceremony. As a symbolic gesture to commemorate the occasion, the players and officials released balloons into the air.

KSLTA secretary Maheshwar Rao welcomed the players and said it was his idea to have an ITF event during Dasara here. “I was pleased when the Deputy Commissioner agreed to conduct it during the festival week,” said Rao.

“I am happy that the Deputy Commissioner, TD Vastrad, hosts Mysore Tennis Club, all the volunteers and tennis fans of Mysuru have come forward to organise this prestigious tournament,” he added.
