The ATP and WTA just finished providing us with their first-quarter reports. One was quite a surprise; the other, not so much.
Surely, no one who has been paying attention since 2011 can be puzzled by Novak Djokovic's success so far this year. Conversely, who would have guessed that the first three months would go by without Serena Williams winning a title? That's a genuine stunner.
The two tours couldn't possibly be driven by different narrative forces. The men's game is all about the relentless march of top-ranked Djokovic; can anyone stop him? The compelling WTA theme is the scramble among a dizzying array of talented players -- from credentialed Grand Slam champions to erratic but undeniably gifted youngsters -- who will try to exploit the sudden, apparent weakness of the woman who still towers over them all, Williams. Can she really be eclipsed, if not dethroned?
